Shawn Melendy MSc
Lands Consultant
Shawn is a biologist, ecologist, and project coordinator who applies an evolutionary framework to guide his work in both human and natural systems. He believes that sustainability is best achieved by letting ancestral ways of caring for lands and waters inform present-day decisions. With a strong background in freshwater ecology and molecular biology, he strives to complement Indigenous Knowledge with western science to better understand and mitigate the impacts of development on ecosystem health.
Shawn holds a Master of Science in applied environmental science from California State University, Monterey Bay, where he specialized in salmon environmental DNA, as well as a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Oregon. He is experienced in project administration, technical and scientific writing, and leading field crews in habitat assessments.
As a descendant of the Hupa People in northern California, Shawn values a deep sense of place, honours the sacred connection between people and land, and appreciates customs that sustain community and cultural identity. This perspective shapes his approach to supporting Indigenous communities in exercising their rights and advocating for environmental protection.
Outside of work, Shawn enjoys skiing, hiking, camping, ultimate frisbee, playing guitar, and serving as a loyal sous chef while cooking with his wife.
