Métis Nation of Ontario

Georgian Bay Islands National Park StoryMap

SVS was hired by the Métis Nation of Ontario to create an ArcGIS StoryMap, an interactive website, based on a report SVS wrote in 2021 called, “Oral History and Cultural Values Study Report for the Georgian Bay Islands National Park Project.” The report consisted of historical research and oral history interviews with Region 7 citizens about the Metis connection to Georgian Bay Islands National Park. The report informed the text of the StoryMap and quotations from the interviews were used throughout the StoryMap. SVS tapped into the large collection of MNO media to add videos, pictures and music throughout the StoryMap. These included fiddle music, videos of traditional Métis dancing and pictures of community gatherings.

The final StoryMap is made up of two pages. The first page tells the Métis history of Beausoleil Island and the surrounding islands. The second page explains in further depth the Georgian Bay Métis culture and traditions that centre around Georgian Bay. The final StoryMap will be displayed at Georgian Bay Islands National Park Visitors Centre on Beausoleil Island.
